Different Types of Trash Bags
In a previous blog, we talked about the main factors to consider when buying a trash bag. The purpose of a bag will determine your selection. But beyond the size, stretch or thickness, there is another thing to consider: the type of trash bag. Here are the main kinds of bags you will come across in the market.
Compost Bags (Green)
These bags are different from standard plastic bags because they are made of vegetable matter, such as potato starch, corn starch, or other plant-based materials that are 100% biodegradable. When exposed to enough moisture, the bags will compost, right along with food scraps, food waste, and yard debris. That means that the bag is environmentally friendly and won’t end up in the ocean.
Recycling Bags (Blue)
These bags are used for things that are recycled, such as aluminum drink cans, food scraps, and newspapers. The majority of recycling bags come in blue color so you can distinguish them from compost bags. Recycling bags will completely decompose in a few months.
Trash Bags (Black)
For all other things that can not be recycled or composted you use a standard plastic bag. Black or dark grey are common colors. Unfortunately, if they reach the ocean, they can contaminate the environment with plastic chemicals.
Last but not least, always purchase bags from a recognized brand name, such as Hefty, Glad, Green Legacy, or Kirkland.
