Tips to Practice Green Traveling Over the Holidays

Toxic-Legacy-Free Holiday Travels Are Possible

As the holidays get closer, many people move toward warmer places. Holiday vacations to tropical destinations are not uncommon —because who wouldn’t want to say “Merry Christmas” on a beautiful beach somewhere, accompanied by a nice drink?

Minimizing waste at home can become second nature but keeping the same practice while you’re traveling can be a little trickier. You’re outside, and it’s easier to forget how to do it, but traveling green doesn’t have to be all that complicated.

Toxic-Legacy-Free Holiday Travels Are PossibleGet Yourself a Reusable Bottle

Single-use plastic water bottles are one of the things people consume the most when traveling. Obviously, we can’t be without water, so the best solution is to have a reusable water bottle that you take with you wherever you go and can refill when needed. There are double wall insulated bottles that keep your drinks nice and cold, collapsible bottles that can be stored when not used, and use minimal space, and so many other options. Also, if you love coffee, getting a reusable coffee cup is a great idea.

Carry a Canvas Tote

Even if you’re going for a walk and don’t plan to buy anything, tuck a canvas tote in your bag, just in case. If you do decide to shop for anything, you’ll have something to carry it with and say no to plastic bags.

Say Yes to Tupperware

If you’re planning to have a picnic, avoid packaged foods. Bring a reusable container with snacks rather than storing food items in single-use plastic or styrofoam containers, plastic wrap, or plastic bags. Also avoid using plastic straws.

Leave Nothing Behind

Wherever you go, make sure that when you leave, you leave nothing but your footprints. If you produce trash while you’re there, bring it back with you and dispose of it properly. Also, if you have some time, invest it in cleaning up waste that is around you. That way you can even leave the place cleaner than it was before you got there.
